theme: freedom through letting go of old beliefs & traditionssong: i want to break free by queen
as i began this series, i realized there were some strong themes that needed to be portrayed. the theme i was feeling as i worked away on this diptych was this idea of breaking free -- abandoning old ideas, cultural traditions, and anything we feel is holding us back from personal progression.
just as our natural world adapts and moves forward, we too want to let go of those things that no longer serve us. the queen song played in my mind and in my CANDYcolored studio as i worked. sometimes i think we feel guilty making changes or abandoning tradition, but it can also be so freeing.
i chose hummingbirds to represent those who have passed, that are still close by giving us support along this brave journey breaking free. the tropical birds represent change -- seeing life through a new lense. the peacock reminds us of our royal and divine potential if we will but leave behind the world for something greater. blackbirds often symbolize assistance through death and onto a new life. the cage is beautiful but empty. beauty (represented by the flowers) await, as well as the cupcake -- reminding us that sweetness is on the other side if we'll simply break free.
