when artist & framer friend todd orchard delivered this gorgeous oval cradled board, i just knew it needed to be considered a gigantic easter egg. and that's what the kids now call it -- "i need to come look at your easter egg mom", "the easter egg is looking good!" my latest series has developed in a beautiful way -- themes of love, growth, processing trials, protection, healing, hope, & rest/ a brief resolution. this painting is all about stepping into the light following struggle and healing. as i thought about what makes that possible, i was reminded that jesus is always the answer. easter and spring thoughts, new beginnings -- all these ideas bouncing around in my mind. i've been researching symbolism in specific flowers, birds and plants and started searching for birds and flowers that were easter symbols. kingfisher stood out as i thought about how christ is a fisher of men and invite us to do the same. kingfisher also represent freedom, courage, balance, perception (did you know they can zoom in their eyes 10 times -- talk about not being myopic lol), and fertility. sandhill cranes our one of my favorite neighbors. they symbolize family, fortune, freedom, new beginnings, hope, joy, creation, peace, friendship, fidelity, longevity, resurrection, and healing protection. Daffodils represent rebirth, new beginnings, and peacefulness of mind. White tulips represent love, passion, devotion, purity, & peace. Pussy willow are also an easter symbol. Tiny kingfisher eggs are included and represent that same growth, new beginnings, life, resurrection and creation. In many cultures and traditions, easter bread is made and eaten. in greece, the tsoureki easter bread is braided and often holds red painted eggs within to represent the blood of christ. finally, of course, the sky/background is a peachy orange like in the song. it reminds me of a beautiful sunset waiting for a new dawn full of possibility and change.
