candy colored studio episode #96 - AAUW utah women artists exhibition: celebrating women vibrant and equal 2020
Four years ago, I applied online to the AAUW Women Artists Exhibition...you can imagine my excitement when I found out my landscape had been accepted into the show. As i sat in the opening and awards ceremony, i was overcome with feelings of validation and support as i listened to members of the local chapter who so graciously put on this labor of love to the community...their experiences as well as those of each trustee family member, who share about a woman relative who has lifted our art community...whose legacy was now supporting our current and future art community.
sweet lady laura first impressed me with her unabashed sense of style and gift as a designer. as we adventured in italy rooming together while studying abroad, i learned and watched as she designed with a 6th sense in 3rd & 4th dimensions. Her authentic soul and raw honesty is such a breath of fresh air and still find myself in awe of her bravery. The sky was never the limit with laura and she exemplifies that in her design as a landscape architect, being a woman, mother, wife, and pursuing her dreams professionally and personally. love you so laura miller-johnson!
not long ago, i was driving my oldest to an early-morning practice. it was dark out and we had a good chat those few minutes to the high school. after he got out, i had a wave of emotions flow over me and i drove the way home crying. parenting is so hard, humbling and each sweet soul needs something completely different -- but one thing is for sure...we all have infinite potential and need to have room to reach it. i’ll share a few very personal experiences in this episode as well as one that happened recently in our community. i also share background on my latest painting i’m working on that is 40x60”.
for 3 years i had one of the best roommates that became a lifelong friend...it all happened by coincidence you could say...but i don’t believe in coincidences and am so grateful for sweet lady janelle in my life. always hardworking and willing to get dirty, janelle has no fear...she’s willing and ready to try all the things when it comes to work, adventure, travel, motherhood, friendship, style, and more. her persistence, optimism, and kindness are some of the things i admire most. she’s an amazing mother and friend. sure love you my indigo-magenta!
locals know myle as the owner of “water from the moon”, foodie, & world traveler. our kids know her as the lilipop fairy, lucy the dog’s caretaker, holiday cookie maker, and memorial hill climber. she’s a beloved friend, neighbor, and such a treasure. hear all about her travels to Bali over the past 37 years, how she became an entrepreneur, travel guide, and even a caterer. you’ll also hear how she’s changing her businesses to meet the needs of her customers during this strange time and looking toward the future and all it will bring.
what do potato chips, the cleaning fairy, painting nails, and the cutest nose all have in common? they are some distinct things i think about when i think about my darling roommate tracy. learn about this extremely patient, selfless SWEETlady.
instagram, facebook & pinterest are all great ways to share your work with the world...but you don’t own it lol, so how is your website looking? can people purchase right on your website in a few moments and have original artwork delivered within a week or so? are they able to learn more from that initial visit by signing up for your email list? in this episode, you’ll find 5 ways to quickly review or update your website. for more tips and help with your website...go to my mini-courses page and snag the one on websites for artists & creatives (spoiler...while this is tailored for artists, the principles will work with any online biz)
everyone needs a marcie in their life….or a “marce” as i affectionately call her. she is the kindest of beautiful souls...loves to laugh, adventure, always pushing herself in new ways, learning new things and enjoying her journey. she’s a fierce & loyal friend, and one of the smartest gals i know. humble, graceful, and makes time for the important things in life. love you marcie and happiest of birthdays dear friend!
interviewing kathryn knight sonntag was an absolute treat for me personally and i know that there will be something that she will share that will speak right to the most authentic and “pure” as kathryn says, part of your heart and soul. we talk about her journey as a writer, poet, landscape architect & planner, and an advocate of the environment & women. I put those last two together for a very specific reason and as you listen you’ll understand why.
kareena and i have been friends since we were 5. a gorgeous ballerina, hunter, homesteader, cook, and mother...i’ve learned so much about life from this beautiful friend. She truly has learned to bloom and blossom despite hard things, she is a warrior in so many ways…the epitome of a strong woman with a huge heart. happy birthday kareena, you’re so loved!
we’re all finding new normals amidst COVID-19...some are joyful moments spent with loved ones, others are the reality that we’re alone and away from loved ones. we’re finding new ways to do school, to cope, to share with friends & loved ones, to hunker down and enjoy home...whatever that looks like. in this episode, i’ll share how we're constantly reevaluating our spaces and how friends everywhere are doing the same. hear about some of the positive changes coming from this strange time.
